Dark Spots: Brightening vs. Exfoliating

LUMEN vitamin C brightening serum texture

Question: I have marks left over from breakouts and some sun spots. Should I be brightening or exfoliating?

Two different jobs

Brightening ingredients work on the appearance of pigment over time. Vitamin C, alpha-arbutin, niacinamide and kojic acid each approach it a little differently, but they share a timeline: weeks, used consistently. Exfoliation works on the surface. By helping dull, uneven cells shed, it makes tone look more even quickly and lets brightening ingredients reach the skin more easily. It does not, on its own, change what is happening underneath.

So the answer to "which one" is usually both, at different times of day, at different frequencies. Brightening is the daily habit. Exfoliation is the weekly support.

A note on what these formulas can and cannot do

Everything here is about the appearance of dark spots and uneven-looking tone. Cosmetic formulas do not treat medical pigmentation conditions, and marks that are changing shape, colour or size should be looked at by a professional rather than a serum.

What to look for

For the daily brightening step, look for a stable form of vitamin C for the morning, and for alpha-arbutin or niacinamide for a gentler, all-day option that suits sensitive skin. For the weekly step, look for a defined acid concentration or a fine physical exfoliant, and look at the frequency instructions before the promise on the front. Look, above all, for sunscreen in your morning routine. Nothing in this article works without it.

How to build the ritual

Morning. Cleanse, hydrate, vitamin C serum, moisturizer, sunscreen. Every day.

Night. Cleanse, hydrate, a brightening serum with alpha-arbutin, then moisturizer. A niacinamide moisturizer can double as the brightening step if you want fewer products.

Once or twice a week. Replace the night serum with a gentle exfoliant, then moisturizer only. Skip vitamin C the next morning if skin feels sensitive.

Patience. Give the brightening step eight to twelve weeks before judging it. Take a photo in the same light at the start.
