Question: I want smoother skin, but every time I use an acid I end up red and tight. What am I doing wrong?
What lactic acid does
Lactic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid. It loosens the bonds holding dull, dead cells to the surface so they shed more evenly, which is why skin looks smoother and brighter after using it. Compared to glycolic acid it has a larger molecule, so it works closer to the surface and tends to be gentler. It is also a humectant, so it hydrates a little as it exfoliates. That combination makes it a good first acid for most people.
Where over-exfoliation comes from
Almost always from frequency, not from the acid itself. Skin needs time to rebuild what exfoliation removes. Use an acid every night, or stack it with a scrub, a retinol alternative and a vitamin C in the same routine, and the surface never gets that time. The signs are familiar: tightness, shine that feels wrong, stinging from products that used to be fine, and a waxy, over-smooth look that is not the same as healthy skin.
What to look for
Look for a defined concentration; around 10% lactic acid is a meaningful leave-on strength. Look for a formula with hydrating support alongside the acid. Look for clear instructions on frequency. And look at the rest of your routine for anything else that exfoliates, including physical scrubs, kojic or brightening exfoliants, and even some cleansers.
How to build the ritual
Frequency. Start once a week. Move to twice a week only if skin is comfortable after three or four weeks. Most skin does not need more.
When. At night, on clean, dry skin, in place of your treatment step. Avoid the eye area and any broken skin.
What follows. Moisturizer only. No serums, no other actives that night.
What surrounds it. On acid nights, skip vitamin C, bakuchiol and any other exfoliant. On other nights, carry on as normal. Use sunscreen every morning; exfoliated skin is more sun-sensitive.
If you overdo it. Stop all actives, keep to cleanser, hydration and a fragrance-free moisturizer for one to two weeks, then start again at once a week. Fragrance-free skincare explains why that simplification works.
The sequence is in how to layer; exfoliants and masks have their own paragraph there.
Relevant formulas
RESURFACE is our 10% lactic acid peel, built for scheduled use, not daily. RESET SCALP uses lactic acid on the scalp to lift build-up before cleansing, once or twice a week. If dark spots rather than texture are the goal, brightening versus exfoliating explains when to use POLIRE instead. To seal after an acid night, SÉRÉNE or VEIL. THE RESURFACE METHOD and THE SCALP METHOD put the steps in order.
