Five considered adjustments for cooler air, and one morning step that stays the same.
A change in season can change the way a familiar ritual feels. As cooler weather arrives and indoor heating returns, skin can feel tighter after cleansing, rougher in certain areas or less comfortable with the lightweight formulas used through summer. That does not always require a new routine. Sometimes it calls for a considered edit. Here are five adjustments worth considering, and the one step that does not change.
1. Reconsider the hydration step
In drier air, some people prefer a dedicated hydration step followed by a richer finishing layer. A hydrating formula such as AQUAIRE, a hyaluronic hydration gel, can be added according to its directions — after toner and before moisturizer, morning and evening or whenever an additional hydration layer is wanted. A toner or mist can provide an optional preparation step when it serves a clear purpose. Not every ritual needs both; choose what your skin and your morning can accommodate.
2. Reconsider the finishing layer
The order of the ritual does not change — cleanse, treat where it has a purpose, then moisturize — but the moisturizer can. If a lightweight moisturizer no longer feels sufficient, consider a richer texture that suits how your skin feels. BAUME is our rich nourishing face cream, applied to clean face and neck after serum, morning and/or evening, especially when skin feels dry or depleted. Richer evening options and lighter alternatives sit together in the Moisturizers collection, organised by how skin feels. If you would rather have hydration and the finishing layer chosen together, THE DEEP HYDRATION RITUAL brings AQUAIRE and BAUME together with CLARÉA for the eye area.
If skin feels more sensitive or uncomfortable as the weather changes, simplify the ritual and choose formulas whose verified directions align with that need. Persistent redness, stinging or discomfort deserves guidance from a qualified professional.
3. Reassess exfoliation
Seasonal roughness is not automatically a reason to exfoliate more often. Follow the frequency stated in the individual product's directions, and reduce frequency or stop if irritation occurs. RESURFACE, our lactic acid peel, is used one to two times a week in the evening on clean, dry skin, with sunscreen the next day. If irritation occurs, reduce frequency or stop. Before increasing exfoliation, consider whether your ritual needs greater comfort or hydration instead.
4. Bring the body in
Seasonal discomfort can become especially noticeable on the hands, arms, legs and other frequently exposed areas. Hotter showers, wool and dry indoor air all play a part. The body follows a flexible version of the same order: begin with cleansing, then add a body serum or cream where desired. A body oil can finish the ritual according to its directions. LUSTRE BODY, our silkening body serum, is massaged onto clean, dry or slightly damp body skin, especially after bathing. Use RESTORE BODY on areas that feel dry, rough or depleted. Choose BARRIER BODY when skin feels delicate or easily depleted and your ritual calls for a comfort-focused step. The BODY RECOVERY RITUAL is those three together, to layer or to use each where it is needed; washes, oils and hand care are in the BODY collection.
5. Do not overlook the smaller areas
Hands are washed often and tend to feel dryness first. Keep a hand cream where you will actually use it — by the sink, at the desk, in a coat pocket — and reapply after washing or whenever hands feel dry, as its directions describe. Knuckles, elbows, shins and the backs of the arms are the other places a ritual tends to forget; a body cream or oil can be applied where skin feels dry, following the formula's directions.
The one thing not to change
Sunscreen. The light is lower and the days are shorter, and it is tempting to drop it. Finish every morning ritual with a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher and follow its label directions, including reapplication. VOLÉDESA LABS does not currently make sunscreen, and no product in this ritual replaces it. Everything else in this edit is optional. That one is not.
Do less, more consistently
The most useful autumn habit may not be a new product. It may be a simple ritual used consistently, with one or two adjustments made deliberately, each formula used as its directions describe. Make a change, then notice how the ritual feels — after cleansing, by mid-afternoon, in the morning — before deciding whether it has earned its place. If skin becomes irritated, reduce or stop. Do less, more consistently.
Every VOLÉDESA LABS formula is vegan. Additional standards are identified on the individual formulas they apply to. Read how we label.
