Question: my skin gets shiny by lunchtime, but it also feels tight and looks dull. How can it be both?
Dry and dehydrated are not the same thing
Dry skin is a skin type. It produces less oil, and it tends to stay that way. Dehydrated skin is a condition. It is short on water, and any skin type can get there, including oily skin. Tightness, dullness and fine lines that appear by afternoon are the classic signs, and they are signs of missing water, not missing oil.
The confusing part is that oil production does not stop when skin is dehydrated. Sometimes it increases, because the skin is trying to protect a surface that has lost water too quickly. So you end up with skin that is shiny in the T-zone and tight everywhere, and you reach for something stronger to deal with the shine, which usually makes the tightness worse.
What is usually behind it
Most often it is the routine. Cleansers that leave skin squeaky, alcohol-heavy toners used twice a day, exfoliating more than the skin can recover from, or skipping moisturizer entirely because the skin "is already oily." Weather plays a part: heating, air conditioning and wind all pull water out. And so does simply not replacing water at the surface, because a routine built only around controlling oil has nothing in it that hydrates.
What to look for
The fix is to add water back and then hold it, without adding heaviness. Look for a cleanser that leaves skin comfortable rather than tight. Look for a hydrating toner or mist rather than an astringent one. Look for humectants, especially hyaluronic acid, sodium PCA and glycerin, in a gel or light serum. And look for a moisturizer that is oil-free or gel-based, so you are sealing in water without adding the shine you were trying to avoid.
Look also at what to remove. If a clay mask or acid is in daily rotation, move it to once or twice a week.
How to build the ritual
Cleanse. Once at night with something gentle; in the morning a splash of water or a very light cleanse is often enough for oily skin that is also dehydrated.
Treat. Apply a hyaluronic gel or serum to damp skin. This is the step most oily-skin routines are missing, and it is the one that changes the tight feeling.
Layer. Seal with an oil-free gel moisturizer. Morning, finish with sunscreen.
Weekly. Keep a clay mask or a gentle exfoliant for one or two nights a week to manage congestion, and follow it with moisturizer only. If lactic acid is part of your routine, use it without over-exfoliating.
Give it two to three weeks. Skin that has been dehydrated for a while can take that long to feel settled. More on the sequence in how to layer.
